SPILIÁ

2018
‘Spilia’ (the Greek word for ‘cave’) is a mirror Luca Beel and Adriaan Tas designed for the competition ‘Spiegeltijd’ initiated by ID&A Thomas More Mechelen – in collaboration with Deknudt Mirrors, which would produce the winning design. The contours of a cave are screen printed on a rectangular mirror, thus referencing poetically to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. The mirror points out that the reflection in it is merely a projection of reality. Its literally narrow perspective invites the viewer to step out of the metaphorical cave and into the real world. Because that is where truth can be found. Beel and Tas did not win first prize, but Deknudt Mirrors was impressed and decided to put their Spilia mirror on the market anyway.
